Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST) was established in the year 1975. It is one of the first State S & T Councils to be set up in the country. KSCST is an autonomous S & T organization under Department of Science & Technology, Government of Karnataka. In co-operation with the Indian Institute of Science and several other premier R & D institutions in the State, KSCST executes many projects and programmes, leading to find S & T based solutions.

During the last 42 years of its existence, KSCST has been pro-actively engaging itself to identify local specific needs / problems in the broad areas of Agriculture, Water, Education, Energy, Ecology and Environment, Habitat, Health, Solid & Electronic Waste and Infrastructure. Over the years, a number of technologies have been translated, from research and demonstration phase, to implementation and operational phase.

One such major objective of the Council, in the field of education, has been to improve the quality of education in the State. With this background, the Establishment of Virtual Class Room to improve the quality of education in the backward taluks of Karnataka, popularly known as Virtual Laboratory, was started in the year 2016.

Virtual Class Room (E - Learning Centre)

Virtual Laboratory is a system that creates an environment designed to facilitate teacher's management of educational courses for their students, especially a system using computer hardware and software, which also involves distance learning. The environment can be web-based and accessed through a portal or software-based and require a downloadable executable file.

A virtual classroom is a teaching and learning environment where participants can interact, communicate, view and discuss presentations, and engage with learning resources while working in groups, all in an online setting. The medium is often through a video conferencing application that allows multiple users to be connected at the same time through the Internet, which allows users from virtually anywhere to participate. A virtual classroom is also known as a virtual learning environment (VLE)

With the above background, Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST), Bangalore and Rural Electrification Corporation Limited, New Delhi are jointly implementing Virtual Classroom (VCR) in 10 high schools in the backward talukas of Karnataka.
