Karnataka is rapidly urbanizing and large number of small towns and villages have becoming urban centers. This rapid growth brings in its wake concomitant problems relate to urban infrastructure such as , energy, water supply, waste water treatment, solid waste, plastic waste and bio medical waste management etc. The magnitudes of these problems were poorly documented and almost the quantum of waste generated is determined by the thumb rules rather than by actual and detailed measurements. Further the collection mechanisms, the processing options, the disposal options are again pushed by guidelines rather than what is really suitable to the location as well as the city. The quantum of wastes generated is determined by the availability of year round vegetables and fruits, socio-economic status of the location as well as the affluence and cultural practices of the city during the recent past.

In this context there is a need for a status report that will reflect upon the potential of all these activities in meeting the spirit and goals of the Solid Waste management rules and guidelines. The detailed status report will be prepared as per stipulated norms and guidelines of KSPCB and CPCB.
